Children’s Outreach

Children’s Outreach

In June 2010, ninety at risk youths from the Santa Monica/Malibu Unified School District performed on our stages alongside our Resident Theatre Company Members.

We look forward eagerly to working with Muir Elementary this coming Spring.

2011 Storytelling Programs at Muir Elementary:

Professional actors will work one on one with under privileged children from the Santa Monica/Malibu unified school district to develop stories from the children’s own lives.

This is a program that nurtures storytelling in its deepest and most creative way.

Storytelling Program Syllabus

Session One:
Introduction of every student. Each student
will share a story about something that happened to them that day.

Session Two:

Continue establishing relationships. Acting teachers will each share a story from their lives.

Session Three:

Partner up students. One student in each group of two raises their hand and shares a funny story that happened to them with their partner. They will both then tell the story to the group. Each one will tell the story as if it happened to them personally and the class guesses who the original storyteller is.

Session Four:

Discuss with the students what elements constitute a good story? Give them examples of what a beginning, middle, end and climax are. The students will share what their favorite stories are from a book, movie, or TV show.

Session Five:

Students are led through an exercise to help them zero in on a story from their lives that they would like to tell. After the exercise the students will put pen to paper and script it.

Session Six:

The students will rehearse and memorize their stories.

Session Seven:

Rehearsal at the theatre with lights and sound.

Session Eight:

The program will culminate in a performance at Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica.
