Accent Reduction & With Emphasis on Standard British, Dublin Irish, & an American Southern Dialect.

a class for students who would like to learn three of the most common dialects that they are likely to be asked to work with.

I have an accent now, how do I get rid of it and sound like I could be from anywhere?  What advantage can I gain from becoming a proficient dialect actor?
This is a class where the student will be taught the tools to learn ANY dialect that they could possibly need to learn; a class for students who would like to learn three of the most common dialects that they are likely to be asked to work with.  It is one thing to be able to do a British or Irish Dialect after taking a class, but it is quite another to have to tools to know that you can learn ANY dialect that you’d need to.
In this class students will learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and Non-Regional American Dialect (NRAD) – the basis from which we can learn any other dialect – and then they’ll learn a Standard British, a Dublin Irish, and an American Southern Dialect.
Beyond just learning the dialects and tools, you have to learn how to handle the challenges that come with acting while maintaining a dialect.  We’ll dive into scene work from some of the best dialect plays out there and ask some questions together…  How does it affect the choices I make?  How do I handle it in rehearsal when I’m still learning to speak with a dialect?  How can I best prepare for a dialect audition?  I have an accent now, how do I get rid of it and sound like I could be from anywhere?  What advantage can I gain from becoming a proficient dialect actor?

Acting Tips for Kissing (Acting Lessons)

Acting Tips for Kissing (Acting Lessons)

Acting Tips for Kissing

Comfort and communication with your fellow actors is essential when filming kissing scenes. Kissing can be an expression of kindness, love, frienship, passion, and a host of other feelings. All of these are words are associated with a comfort zone.  We all know that kissing scenes have to happen in film, but it would be a good idea talk with your scene partner to establish an adequate level of comfort before shooting. Just having this brief conversation will set up good things to follow.

As far as hygiene is concerned, it’s not a bad idea to pop in a listerine strip before hand. Not only is it courteous, but it doesn’t hurt your professional reputation either.

Acting Tips for Crying (Acting Lessons)

Acting Tips for Crying (Acting Lessons)

Acting Tips for Crying

Strasberg’s Emotional Recall (remembering similar instances) is a nice tactic, but it’s also possible to picture the need to cry from what’s going on ‘right now’ (in the moment). Happy crying or sad crying, whatever it is, find your place. Crying is a human emotion in response to something. You have to find the beat that brings this feeling to life.

Crying always develops in levels. It’s up to the actor to find these levels. Breathing from small breaths to heavy breathing can emphasize the performance, as crying is also a repertory system. Air is the key.

Tip: If you’re not on a stage (which would be 1 take) and in a film set ( which can range from 1 to 40 takes) your eyes can get dry up pretty quick. You don’t want to force the emotion, but you do want your eyes to last until they capture the right moment. I would advise eye drops only if your eyes are drying up and causing you pain.

You can learn more helpful strategies by registering for Edgemar’s Scene Study class.

Acting Emotions List- Acting Lessons

Acting Emotions List

Actors face a lot of different emotions; Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, and Surprise (to name a few). Emotions have to come from somewhere. They’re a result of something happening. Someone hits your car with a bat, you’re angry….or maybe your cynical because the car was already hit by a bat twice today. You have the capability within the character (unless the script already says) to bring about that choice. The characters emotion is a direct result of preceding events.

A great way to explore these emotions is to practice based off of your characters overall objective and scene objective. You’ll discover a multitude of emotions in Michelle Danner’s Script Analysis and Scene Study Class.
